WHAT ARE "OPEN WHEEL" RACERS?
When you think of an "open wheel" race car, think of a car that has its wheels outside of the fenders, not under the car or fenders. When you think of an "open wheel" race car, you would think of a Formula One, American Championship car racing, midget car or sprint car, among others.
This photo is on the cover of a book entitled "The American Dirt Track Racer" by Joe Scalzo. The
classic era of open wheel dirt track racing was from 1946-1970. Likely no one will ever duke it out
the way these brave Champ, Sprint, and midget drivers did-and likely no one will ever write it with
more knowledge and passion than Joe Scalzo. A.J. Foyt, Parnelli Jones, Roger Ward, Bobby Unser and others starred in this amazing time. Hard cover, 160 pages with 200 photos.
